CHANGE OF SURNAME

PROCEDURE FOR CHANGE OF SURNAME

Changing of surname or name and surname is one of the simplest processes in Zimbabwe. You need to approach a legal practitioner who is a Notary Public who will assist you with the change of name process. For clarity, find below the steps you need to take to effect a change of surname/ name and surname.

Step 1
A change of surname or name and surname is done through a notarial deed of change of name which is prepared by a legal practitioner who is a notary public. For minor children, the notarial deed is signed by the guardian.

Step 2
A notice of the change of name is publicized in the Government Gazette and any 1 local newspaper calling upon any objections to the change of name.

Step 3
The notarial deed of change of name is registered with the Deeds Office.

Step 4
A copy of the registered notarial deed is submitted to the Registrar of Births and Deaths for effecting the change.

OTHER KEY POINTS TO NOTE
They are other factors which you need to note as follows:
1. Change of forename does not require one to do a notarial deed of change of name. One only needs to approach the Registrar General and make an application for change of forename.
2. A woman who is legally married and intending to assume her marital name, only needs to approach the Registrar General with her Identity documents, husband’s Identity document and the marriage certificate. A notarial deed of change of surname is not necessary for one to assume marital name.
